Online tutors available through county library

The Monmouth County Library has qualified tutors available online to assist county children and teens in grades 4-12 who are stumped by homework assignments. Students can get free homework help from tutors via the Internet at any Monmouth County Library or from home at the library’s Web site, www.monmouth.lib.nj.us.

The online service, "Live Homework Help," is a free tutoring service from Tutor.com through Q and A NJ, the statewide reference service. Q and A NJ is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; the tutoring service is available between 2-10 p.m. daily. Q and A NJ librarians provide reference help and connect students to tutors in math, science, social studies and English via the Internet.

To access the tutor service, click on the "Q and A NJ" or "Live Homework Help" link on the Monmouth County Library home page. Visitors to the site will be referred to a tutor in an online classroom for up to 20 minutes.

For more information, call the Monmouth County Library at (732) 431-7222.

Schechter School slates auction, open house

Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County will host a goods and services auction Feb. 22 at Temple Beth Shalom, Manalapan. Dinner and preview will begin at 7:15 p.m., followed by a live and silent auction at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $18 per person in advance or $25 at the door.

Auctioneer Paul Showers will be the master of ceremonies. Auction highlights include a Hilton Head vacation, sporting event tickets, fine dining at The Four Seasons and Fresco, golf outings, personal chef services, spa treatments, music lessons and many local day camps. A selection of fine art will also be featured. This year’s buffet dinner will feature specialties from around the world and will be available throughout the evening.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the children of the Solomon Schechter Day School and Middle School. Now in its 24th year, and with more than 200 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, the school will celebrate its first eighth-grade graduation in June.

The school will hold an open house Feb. 13. Those interested in pre-kindergarten through grade five will meet from 7:15-8:15 p.m., and those interested in grades six through eight will meet from 8:15-9:15 p.m. The school is located at 22 School Road East in Marlboro. For further information, call (732) 431-5525.

Lecture will focus on what to do when laid off

The Monmouth County Library Headquarters, Manalapan, will offer a free program on "What to Do if You Have Been Laid Off."

The program will feature a local employment law attorney, Frederic G. Leeds, explaining employees’ rights in the work place when there is a layoff. The program will consist of a lecture followed by a question and answer session.

The program, which was rescheduled because of prior inclement weather, will be held Feb. 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the library, 125 Symmes Drive.
