CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, announced that its radiation oncology department now offers the Varian On Board Imager to deliver image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat cancer patients.
IGRT uses three-dimensional imaging to localize a tumor each day before treatment. The integrated imaging technology improves the precision and effectiveness of IGRT by giving doctors the ability to target and track tumors more accurately. This new technology allows higher doses of radiation to be delivered safely and reduces the amount of healthy tissue affected by the radiation.
The medical center also has opened an endovascular surgery laboratory providing minimally invasive treatments for a range of noncardiac vascular conditions, in which blood vessels may be clogged, collapsed or otherwise malfunctioning. The hospital named Larry E. Shindelman, M.D., a board-certified vascular and endovascular surgeon in private practice in East Brunswick, medical director of the lab.
Endovascular surgery involves procedures on blood vessels from within the vessels themselves instead of from the outside in, as with traditional, open surgery. In such a surgery, the physician inserts a thin tube (catheter) and miniature treatment devices, including stents and balloons, through a small incision in an easily accessible artery, usually in the patient’s groin or arm. Then the surgeon uses X-rays and other imaging techniques to help guide them through the blood vessels to the affected location. Endovascular surgery is also called interventional radiology because of its reliance on imaging technology. The procedure does not require general anesthesia. Other advantages include minimal scarring, lowered risk of complications, faster recovery and reduced pain.
Dr. Shindelman is conducting a clinical trial involving a special stent system for treating carotid artery stenosis. The system helps open narrowed arteries and captures plaque that may be dislodged from the artery wall to prevent it from traveling through the bloodstream and possibly causing a heart attack, stroke or other health problem. He is one of only 125 physicians nationwide involved in this research. The stent system is designed by Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson company.
