Jewish center to offer Hebrew H.S. classes
Perrineville Jewish Center, Millstone, is starting Hebrew High School classes for any bar/bat mitzvah graduate. Classes will be held from 11 a.m. to noon one Sunday each month, starting in September. Allentown High School Redbirds Band is sponsoring its annual “kick off the season” car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Hope Fire Company, Route 526, Allentown. The cost is $8 for a car, $10 for a truck, and even the dog can get a bath for $5. The crew will also wash horse trailers (priced for size). In addition, baked goods will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Redbird Marching Band.
AHS Class of ’85 slates 20-year reunion

The Perrineville Jewish Center will hold a Membership and Hebrew School Open House Sept. 11 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; coffee and danish will be served. Sabbath services are conducted every Friday evening and Saturday morning, with the children often leading the services with the rabbi. There is a monthly Tot Shabbat program as well as a full-service Hebrew school for ages 8-13; a Hebrew high school for those who already had their bar/bat mitzvah, through high school age; a men’s club and a sisterhood; social functions; youth activities; and adult education, including kaballah classes. TRF Inc. (Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation) will host its first New Jersey hunter pace fundraiser at Assunpink Wildlife Management Area, East Branch Road, Upper Freehold Township, Oct. 16. TRF is a charitable organization devoted to equine rescue. The pace, which organizers hope to make an annual event, is open to all riding styles. Riders are required to wear protective helmets and footwear with a heel. Teams of two or three will depart between 9 a.m. and noon from the park’s Conservation Center. The event will be held rain or shine; the fee is $20 per rider. Only time counts on a marked course of 8 to 10 miles. The course will include natural jumps with go-arounds, scenic trails, hills, fields and a very shallow water crossing. There will be three divisions — Open, Senior and Junior — with prizes and/or ribbons for the top six teams in each division, and a $150 cash prize for the team closest to the pace time. A goody bag will be provided to each participating horse. Riders must bring water for their horses. Volunteers are also needed for event; e-mail hunterpace@monmouthcountyhorserider.com. She is the owner of a 19-year-old thoroughbred gelding for 14 years and recently adopted 5-year-old gelding, both former racehorses. The Unlimited Potential Theater Company (UPTCo), a project of VSA arts of New Jersey (VSA/NJ), is seeking poems, essays, short stories and plays by New Jersey residents 18 years of age or older for its 12th annual Joyce Indik New Jersey Wordsmith Competition. The contest is open to all writers, and submissions by writers with disabilities are especially encouraged. All works submitted will be judged by a panel of professionals in the fields of theater and/or literature. Selected works will be showcased at the New Jersey Readers’ Theater followed by a reception to honor the authors. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 14. VSA/NJ, a nonprofit organization that is an affiliate of the international VSA arts network, is dedicated to promoting the creative power of people with disabilities. UPTCo, a project of VSA/NJ, is an inclusive program designed to involve individuals with physical disabilities in all aspects of the performing arts. Nursery school moving to Roosevelt Public School Roosevelt Community Nursery School is moving to the Roosevelt Public School. Community Day set for Sept. 17 Upper Freehold Township will sponsor its annual Community Day celebration Sept. 17 beginning at 1 p.m. at Byron Johnson Park, Ellisdale Road. The rain date is Sept. 18. Admission is free. The event will feature inflatable rides for children, games and contests for all ages, pony rides, a food court, a magic show, crafts, a petting zoo, ice cream-eating contests, door prizes and other activities. There will also be live performances by Moot Davis & The Cool Deal at 3 p.m. and The Mahoney Brothers from 6 to 8 p.m. A fireworks display at dusk will conclude the festivities. Horse Park to host 2006 ‘Jersey Fresh’ event Nancy Hutcheson, president of the Horse Park of New Jersey, Upper Freehold Township, announced that the “Jersey Fresh CCI/CCI” will be held May 31-June 4 at the Horse Park next year. This will be the fourth year for the CCI and the second year for the CCI at the Upper Freehold facility. Hutcheson also announced the new event manager will be Jane Cory. Cory comes to the Jersey Fresh with an extensive background in eventing. She began eventing in 1971 at the novice and training level. Cory was long listed for the World Equestrian games and competed in advanced level events through 1991. She is the manager and co-owner of Pleasant Hollow Farm in Coopersburg, Pa., where she handles the daily operation of the farm with more than 60 horses. Pleasant Hollow Farm has held recognized events from novice to intermediate for more than 30 years. She is a member of the U.S. Equestrian Federation, the U.S. Eventing Association, the U.S. Dressage Federation, and the Eastern States Dressage and Combined Training Association. Local FFA chapter receives national ranking The National FFA Organization recently selected the Allentown High School FFA Chapter as a two-star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award program. The three-star rating is the highest level of accomplishment a chapter can achieve. Allentown Chapter members have been invited to attend the 78th National Convention in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 26-29, where they will be recognized for the honor. The Allentown High School Chapter offers a variety of activities, including plant sales, monthly chapter meetings, tutoring, school landscaping projects, leadership conference opportunities, scholarships, career development involvement, and attendance at the state and national FFA conventions. Community activities include the Adopt-a-Road program, volunteering at the Hope Fire Company’s fish fry and turkey dinners, the Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS) program, and Agriculture Day. The Jewish Community Center of Western Monmouth has scheduled the following activities and events: A bingo and gift auction will be held Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Solomon Schechter Day School, 22 School Road East, Marlboro. The entrance fee is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. A movie and luncheon are scheduled for Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. at The Brookside assisted living facility, 93 Manalapan Ave., Freehold. The movie is “The Singing Blacksmith,” a black-and-white 1938 movie in Yiddish with new English subtitles, which has been digitally restored. Lunch will follow at 12:45 p.m. The cost is $15 in advance or $18 at the door. Singer Cameron Chandler and comedian Danny Curtis will perform Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. at The Brookside. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. A trip to see the matinee performance of “Chicago” at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark is set for March 30. Tickets are $60 for JCCWM members and $70 for nonmembers, and include show, bus and driver’s tip. Add $10 for a box lunch. A trip to the Folksbiene Yiddish Theater production of “Di Ksube” (The Marriage Contract) in New York City is scheduled for April 26 for the 2 p.m. matinee. Lunch is on your own.
