Scholarship program for Millstone grads

The Millstone Township PTO will again sponsor a scholarship program in 2006. The PTO will provide $2,000 and is seeking matching funds from individuals and local businesses. The final award totals and recipients will be based on this effort.

The scholarships are based on personal interviews, community service, and an essay on the topic "What challenges I have experienced in my life and how I have been able to overcome them."

Any high school senior who resides in Millstone, has graduated from Millstone Township Middle School, and has enrolled in a two- or four-year educational program (including community college or nursing, vocational or business program) is eligible to apply.

Applications are available in the main office of the Millstone Township Middle School and in the guidance offices of Allentown High School, The Peddie School, St. John Vianney High School, Notre Dame High School, and the Monmouth County career academies. The application deadline is April 7. Applicants will be notified of an interview date and time, and awards will be announced at the graduation ceremonies.

Harlem Wizards to play

at Allentown H.S.

The world-famous Harlem Wizards basketball team has been performing trick hoops and alley-oops around the globe since 1962, and on April 8 they'll bring their magic to Allentown High School.

The event will also feature a squad of local "stars" - school and community leaders - as well as student participation in the half-time show and a free autograph session. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the activities are set to begin at 7 p.m. Refreshments and souvenirs will be available. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Woody's Town Cafe, the Allentown Pharmacy, Bloomers & Things, Allentown Borough Hall, Cream Ridge Golf Club, the Upper Freehold Municipal Building, or by calling (609) 259-6019. The event is sponsored by the Upper Freehold/Allentown Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism & Drug Abuse.

Roosevelt students can attend Millstone camp

The Roosevelt Recreation Department has partnered with Millstone Township to offer an opportunity for Roosevelt students to participate in the Millstone Recreation Summer Camp at Millstone Elementary School. The cost per child for the five-week program is $350 if paid by May 1. Optional trips are offered each day for an additional cost. Garden club to host

The Allentown Garden Club will welcome spring with a container plant workshop at 7 p.m. April 13 at Timothy's Garden Center, Route 130 north, Robbinsville. Participants may bring an easily transportable pot or may buy one at the garden center. A trained horticulturist will offer instruction and suggestions, and an array of soils, annuals and perennials will be available for purchase. Local teens to be part of 'British Invasion'

A group of young musicians from the local area will join some big names from the 1960s music scene in a tribute to the Beatles on April 7 at the Crossroads Theater, 15 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. "The Fab 42: A British Invasion Spectacular" will feature Denny Laine of the Moody Blues, Joey Molland of Badfinger, Liverpool's Billy J. Kramer, Freehold's The Cryers, and students of the Monmouth Academy of Musical Arts, Marlboro. The students - Eva Friedman, 14, of Millstone, on drums; Chris Sabol, 15, of Marlboro, on keyboard; Vincent Rugnetta, 18, of Colts Neck, on bass; and guitarists E.J. Greene, 18, of Manalapan, and Ian Kahn, 17, of Millstone - will do an opening set and then jam with Laine, Molland and Kramer for the encores. The Cryers will host and produce the event.
