Flag ceremony to honor longtime resident As part of Allentown's 300th-year celebration, the Women's Association of Allentown will dedicate the flag located at the Main Street entrance to Heritage Park in Allentown. During the flag ceremony, the POW flag will be dedicated to the memory of Frederick F. Schmitt. A veteran of the Korean War, Schmitt was bestowed with a life membership to the American Legion. He had been in the Allentown area since 1940 and served the community in many ways, including nine years on the Board of Education. Many residents remember him as the man who carried the American flag for 18 years in the annual Lions Club Memorial Day Parade. The POW flag was donated by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 31 of Hamilton Township in Schmitt's memory and to honor all POWs. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 11, at 12:30 p.m. in front of the Main Street entrance to Heritage Park.
