The Millstone wrestlers have been at it again. They are entering tournaments throughout the state, representing the township and coming home with gold. On Dec. 3, Zack Turner and Jack Giglia entered the Toms River Holiday tournament, and each finished in first place, pinning all opponents in their path. On Dec. 10, six wrestlers, Chris Dowdy, Alex Alves, Dillon Denardo, Andrew DeRosa, Anthony Bliss and Jack Giglia, showed up at the Wall Holiday Tournament. The latter four finished first for the Gold Medal. For newcomers Andrew DeRosa and Anthony Bliss, it was their first experience on the mat. Second-year wrestler Dillon Denardo upset the top-seeded wrestler in the finals with a come-from-behind, last-minute victory. For veteran wrestler Jack Giglia, it was his 10th consecutive tournament win this year, bringing him to a record of 28-0. On Saturday, Jan. 13, the wrestlers will host their first home match with the Fighting Irish and Hopewell Valley, at the Millstone Elementary School, starting at 8 a.m. On Sunday, Jan. 14, many of the Millstone wrestlers will be headed to the Lacey Mat Cat Classic in Lacey High School, Lanoka Harbor.
The Jersey Shore Giants 12U baseball team is holding tryouts for the spring season. Undefeated (7-0) in the fall, they will be playing at Frogbridge on the 50/70 field in Jackson this year. Games on Sundays do not conflict with Little League. They have a long history of accommodating busy-parent schedules. If you have a tournament or near-tournament quality 11- or 12-year-old who loves baseball, call Coach Jeff for a no-pressure tryout at (732) 259-0761 or send an e-mail to jmende@optonline.net.
Freehold Raceway will host a harness handicapping contest on Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The contest, which will be restricted to 100 entrants, will consist of the entire Freehold Raceway card of live racing. The contest format will consist of $10 win and place wagers and contestants must wager on a minimum of 10 races, but may bet all of the races. Total cost to enter is $300 with $100 going toward prize money and the remaining $200 will be used as a betting stake. Contestants keep all parimutuel winnings, and prize money will be paid out to the five handicappers with the highest bankrolls. The winner's share is 50 percent of the prize money. Second place is 25 percent, followed by 12 percent for third, eight for fourth and five for fifth. A special feature of the contest, which will take place in the Inside Track Room at the raceway, which will be awarded to the Top 2 finishers, is entry into the 2007 National Harness Handicapping Championship at the Meadowlands on April 21. A complete list of rules and entry forms can be obtained on the Freehold Raceway Web site at www.freeholdraceway.com or by calling (732) 462-3800. Deadline for entry into the contest is Jan. 12.
