Millstone Township first-grader Jesse Gabodd, 7, reads to Spirit, a therapy dog, during Read Across America day at the Millstone Township Elementary School.
A senator, college football players and even a couple of dogs helped share local students' enthusiasm for reading on March 6.

The Millstone Township School District celebrated Read Across America with many activities and guest readers who visited the elementary and middle schools to participate in the national literacy recognition program.

State Sen. Ellen Karcher and two Rutgers University football players read with children at the middle school, while Furry Angels, a group of volunteers who provide therapy to individuals through the use of dogs, read with elementary school students.

"Students enjoyed listening to their guests read as well as participating in question-and-answer periods," Louise San Nicola, spokesperson for the school district, said.

According to San Nicola, Karcher read the Dr. Seuss book "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day" to second-graders, and Rutgers football players Jimmy Dumont and Craig Mc Govern read the Rutgers book "Hello, Scarlet Knight" to third-graders.

First-graders received a visit from the Furry Angles, and read books to Spirit and Totu, therapy dogs who got to take the day off.
