Gay Straight Alliance designation clarified

In response to the March 1 article on Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs), I would like to clarify that our organization, the Central New Jersey chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN CNJ) does not have a trademark for the designation GSA or Gay Straight Alliance.

This title has been adopted by numerous high school organizations throughout New Jersey and the nation.

Each of these groups determines its own functions within the parameters of its local situation. However, such groups hold in common the reduction of bias based on sexual orientation and gender identity in their school communities.

It's important to note that these student groups include gay and straight members and have decided to take steps to end the prevalent negative stereotypes and harassment of persons based on real or perceived sexual orientation.

We're pleased to know of the efforts of courageous students at Allentown High School to help their school be a safe and welcoming place for all regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

I would hope that all persons in our western Monmouth County area would heartily support these efforts of young people.
