Boroughs set for upcoming June primary
BY JANE MEGGITT
Staff Writer

Two small boroughs in the area will likely have the same mayors for the next four years.

Allentown Mayor Stuart Fierstein has filed to run in the June 5 Republican primary for his party's nomination to again seek the mayoral seat in Allentown. The Democratic Party in the borough did not field a candidate for mayor.

In Roosevelt, Mayor Elsbeth "Beth" Battel will run in the Democratic primary for the mayor's position. No Republicans filed to run for the position in the primary.

Unless write-in candidates challenge and best Fierstein and Battel in the primary or the November election, they will both serve four-year terms in the mayoral positions of their respective towns.

Fierstein served as a councilman from 1986 to 1991 and is serving his fourth term as mayor in Allentown.

Battel became mayor of Roosevelt last year when voters removed Neil Marko from office in a recall election.

Three residents have filed to run in the primary election for their respective party's nomination to seek the two open Borough Council seats in Allentown.

Incumbent Councilmen Daniel Zorovich and Raymond Cantor will seek the Republican Party's nomination for Borough Council seats in the primary. Current Republican Councilman David Strobino opted not to pursue another term.

Wayne Smith, who has run for the council in the past, filed to run in the Democratic primary.

The candidates elected in November will serve three-year terms on the council.

In Roosevelt, Democratic incumbent Peggy Malkin has filed to run in the primary for a second three-year term on the Borough Council. Democrat Kirk Rothfuss will also run in the primary to seek the party's nomination to fill the seat of longtime Democratic Councilwoman Pat Moser, who did not file to run for re-election.

No Republicans filed to run in the primary for the council seats.
