3 will vie for GOP nod in U.F. BY JENNIFER KOHLHEPP Staff Writer
UPPER FREEHOLD - Three Republicans will face off in the June 5 primary to earn their party's nomination to seek two open Township Committee seats.
Stanley Moslowski Jr. will challenge LoriSue Horsnall-Mount and her running mate, John A. Mele, a former committeeman, in the election. Mayor Stephen Fleischacker and Deputy Mayor William Miscoski, who are both Republicans, did not file to run for re-election. No Democrats filed to run in the primary.
Moslowski, 43, graduated from Allentown High School and is an excavating contractor and a farmer.
Moslowski has served for the past six years on the Upper Freehold Republican County Committee and the past two years as the committee's chairman. He has also taught religious education classes at St. John's Church in Upper Freehold and has supported recreation programs for Allentown and Upper Freehold.
Moslowski said the township faces becoming overbuilt in a short amount of time.
"While realizing that we cannot prevent development, I'd like to see reasonable, controlled growth," he said.
He also sees rising property taxes as a concern. To save taxpayers money, he would like to have the opportunity to bring in nonresidential ratables, preserve farmland and share services with neighboring communities.
Horsnall-Mount, 42, the director of sales operations at Allentown Inc. in Allentown, is a graduate of Allentown High School who has lived in Allentown and Upper Freehold Township for most of her life. She served on the Allentown Borough Council while living in Allentown.
Horsnall-Mount sees uncontrolled growth as the most important issue in the community. She does not support the Planning Board's idea of creating town centers and instead wants to focus on creating more open space and preserving more farmland. She further believes that quality education, effective emergency services and public safety issues should be among the Township Committee's highest priorities.
Mele, 49, the area sales manager for HOBAS Pipe USA, of Houston, has actively worked with the state's Environmental Federation, Water Environment Associa-tion, Government Affairs Committee, Watershed Planning Committee, Safety Committee, and Constitution and Bylaws Committee. He has also served on the Monmouth County Regional Environmental Planning Council, Transfer of Development Rights Committee, Water Resources Association, and Stormwater Advisory Committee, along with the Monmouth Conservation Foundation.
Mele served on the Township Committee from 2002 to 2004, as deputy mayor in 2003 and as mayor in 2004. In addition, he has served on the township's Board of Health, Open Space Committee, Planning Board and Agricultural Board.
Mele also sees growth and taxes as major issues in the township. He said he hopes to once again gain the opportunity to work "on the vision of Upper Freehold as a rural community with a dedication to open space, slower growth and a community with a continued commitment to the agricultural industry."
