Racehorses wanted for helping SRF

A percentage of the winnings of some New Jersey racehorses this year will go toward helping other equines in need.

Pacing champ Lis Mara and his owners, Mike Gulotta, of MJG Racing Stables in Annandale, and Andy Willinger, of Louisville, Ky., have teamed up to help the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF) in Freehold introduce its new Owners' Percentage Program, according to an SRF press release.

The program encourages owners with horses racing in New Jersey to donate any percentage of their horses' or stable winnings to the foundation to help it continue its mission of caring for unwanted or noncompetitive standardbreds.

Gulotta and Willinger have pledged to donate a percentage of all purse money won by Lis Mara this year to the foundation and are encouraging other owners and trainers to join them, according to the release.

"I believe that everyone who has benefited from racing owes it to the horses to give something back," Gulotta said in the press release.

The SRF has been in existence for 18 years. Founded in 1989, SRF has completed over 2,000 adoptions and is currently caring for 140 horses awaiting homes.

"I want them to be there for at least another 18 years," Gulotta said in the press release. "Without the foundation, what would happen to the horses?"

All licensed horse owners in New Jersey will soon receive a form in the mail asking them to join the Percentage Program. By simply checking a box and returning the form, the designated amount of horse or stable winnings will be deducted from purse money and donated directly to the foundation.

The Meadowlands in East Rutherford and the Freehold Raceway Racetrack in Freehold are currently participating in the program.

SRF will host its annual charity golf tournament on May 14 at Manalapan's Knob Hill Country Club.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the foundation, which finds homes for noncompetitive standardbreds and ensures their lifelong care. The SRF also reaches out to children at risk through its after-school program called Youth in Focus and assists incarcerated teenagers within the juvenile justice system.

The cost per player is $195, which includes greens fees, cart, lunch, cocktail hour and dinner.

SRF is seeking sponsors on many levels along with gift items such as tickets or box seats to sporting events, travel tickets or packages, and valuable collectibles and novelty items for a charity auction and raffle.
