Flamingos will invade this summer

ALLENTOWN - The Allentown Public Library expects an unusual infestation of pink flamingos in the vicinity beginning June 1.

While such flocks are common near the equator, it is unusual for them to venture this far north. However, this particular flock coming to Allentown, Upper Freehold and Millstone is known to overwhelm front lawns and stay for several days before moving on to a new lawn, according to the library's board of trustees.

According to the trustees, the flock is quite persistent but will respond to their direction for a donation of $30 to the Allentown Public Library Association, which raises funding for the library.

"That is, should you like to schedule a flock of pink, plastic flamingos to visit a friend, family or neighbor's lawn, you can contact the library," said Elaine Saullo, of the association.

Saullo added, "If you happen to be highly allergic to flamingos, you can arrange to insure your homestead for a seasonal fee of $20 to protect against such an invasion."

The flamingos are scheduled to move from lawn to lawn as donations are received through Oct. 1, when the flock is expected to migrate for the winter, according to Saullo.

For more information about the fundraiser or to arrange for the flock to visit a loved one, call the library at (609) 259-7565.
