Horse Park helps cancer survivors

The Jersey Classic Horse Show, scheduled for June 8, 9 and 10 at the Horse Park of New Jersey, Route 524, Upper Freehold Township, will benefit sharing Village Cancer Survivor Groups, Far Hills.

Participants in sharing Village's "Driving For Surviving" pediatric oncology equestrian driving program will exhibit their skills at a special exhibition on June 9 in the afternoon.

According to a press release, the "Driving for Surviving" program is designed to meet the needs of young cancer survivors and family members of cancer survivors by addressing this experience physically, mentally, spiritually and socially through the camaraderie of an expertly taught driving program.

The children in the program, more often than not, have never been exposed to the equestrian world. They come to the program having been through the rigors of cancer treatment and are empowered with new skills, are provided the opportunity to regain control of their life and to just be children.

"Driving For Surviving" is provided at no cost through sharing Village in conjunction with the Pediatric LITE program at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the Valerie Fund of Newark Beth Israel and physicians within the cancer community.

All of the coaches are volunteers and most of the horses and equipment are on loan. The 3-year-old program has recently received a grant from Ronald McDonald Charities, enabling it to double in size to 20 young survivors ages 6 to 14, according to the press release.

The connection to the American Saddlebred Horse Association of New Jersey, sponsor of the Jersey Classic, brought sharing Village into contact with Saddlebred Rescue Inc., a organization dedicated to saving Saddlebreds and other horses from going to slaughter.

The Jersey Classic Horse Show will be held at the Horse Park of New Jersey and features the American Saddlebred with divisions for Morgan, Hackney, Roadster and Standardbred horses including Open, Equitation and Academy divisions for all saddle horse types.
