Turnout low in Monmouth for primaries

Out of the 400,259 registered voters in Monmouth County, 16,668 voters - which amounts to just over 4 percent - went to the polls for the primary election.

Locally, in Allentown, current Mayor Stuart Fierstein received 38 votes to earn the GOP's nomination for the mayoral seat in the borough. Fierstein is running uncontested for the position.

For the two open Borough Council seats in Allentown, Republicans Dan Zorovich and Raymond Cantor received 38 votes and 35 votes, respectively, to earn their place on the Republican ticket for the general election. They will contend with Wayne R. Smith, who earned 20 votes to get his name on the Democratic ticket for the November election.

In Millstone Township, Republican incumbent Bob Kinsey and Democrat William Nurko are vying for the one open Township Committee seat. Kinsey ran uncontested in the Republican primary and received 148 votes. Nurko ran uncontested in the Democratic primary, earning 56 votes.

In Roosevelt, Democrats Peggy Malkin and Kirk Rothfuss are running uncontested for the two open Borough Council seats. In the primary, they received 57 votes and 58 votes, respectively.

Roosevelt's Democratic mayor, Elsbeth "Beth" Battel, ran uncontested in the Democratic primary for the mayoral seat. She received 69 votes. No Republicans in Roosevelt filed to run in the primaries.
