Learn to cash in on racing at luncheon Monmouth County will host one of the world's premier sporting events in October, and businesses and residents should be prepared to cash in.
New Jersey has been selected to host the Breeders' Cup, which involves four days of high-stake thoroughbred racing with competitors from around the world. The event will take place Oct. 24-27 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport.
"The Breeders' Cup will attract visitors from around the world, and they will spend millions of dollars in Monmouth County," Bea Duffy, director of the county's Department of Economic Development and Tourism, said in the press release. "This is an opportunity to show millions of television viewers and tens of thousands of visitors all of the assets that make Monmouth County such a wonderful place to live."
Tourism representative Jeanne DeYoung said there has never been an event of this scope in Monmouth County.
"We are expecting large crowds based on hotel reservations and conversations with local officials and people who are finding lodging," DeYoung said. "This will be a great event for restaurants, shops and tourist destinations and for the people who work at them."
In preparation for the event, Dennis Dowd, senior vice president of racing at Monmouth Park, will hold a Fifth Wednesday Squires Luncheon Aug. 29.
Sponsored by the Monmouth County Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Fifth Wednesday luncheons allow leaders in business, government and civic associations to gather and exchange ideas. The luncheon is the largest regularly scheduled event of its kind in Monmouth County.
"We are very pleased to have Mr. Dowd as the guest speaker," Duffy said. "He will provide a thorough look at this very important event. Given the impact the Breeders' Cup will have on Monmouth County, we are expecting a very large crowd."
The luncheon will be held at Branches, 123 Monmouth Road, West Long Branch. Guests will have a choice of stuffed breast of chicken or broiled tilapia. Tickets are $30 per person. Reservations should be made by Friday, Aug. 24. To make a reservation or for more information, call the department at (732) 431-7470.
