Race for the Cure slated at Six Flags The 14th annual Komen New Jersey Race for the Cure will be held at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson on Sunday, Oct. 14.
The race, hosted by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey, includes USA Track & Field (USATF)- certified women's and men's 5K runs, coed 2.5-mile and 1-mile walks, and children's fun runs. The festivities begin at 8:30 a.m, according to a Susan G. Komen for the Cure press release.
Attracting more than 20,000 participants, survivors and activists, the Race for the Cure is more than a walk and run. The race brings together breast cancer survivors, loved ones, supportive community members and local organizations for one cause - to save lives. It is a day of hope, remembrance and inspiration for all, according to the press release.
After 13 years in the Princeton area, this is the first year that Six Flags Great Adventure will host the event.
"The new location is accessible to Komen supporters throughout our service area and will help the race to continue to grow," Nancy Healey, executive director of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey, said in the release.
In addition to hosting the event, Six Flags will offer half-price admission to the theme park following the race to any registered race participant. Six Flags will also donate $5 from each admission purchased by race participants back to Komen.
"This gives people the opportunity to make a day out of the race," Healey said.
The event registration fee is $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 10 and under.
The race may be just one day in October, but its impact is felt all year long. This year's event is expected to raise $2.1 million, according to the press release.
Of the net proceeds from the race, 25 percent will support national breast cancer research programs, while the remaining 75 percent will stay in the local community, according to the press release.
"We rely on the support of our sponsors, volunteers, team captains and donors to make the race a success and are truly grateful for their continued support," Healey said.
