Carjacking reported in Allentown
BY JANE MEGGITT Staff Writer

ALLENTOWN - A crime more common in urban areas happened for the first time in the downtown Oct. 5.

The first carjacking on record in Allentown occurred that Friday night. No one was injured in the incident, according to the police report.

A 23-year-old Hamilton man, employed at La Piazza Ristorante, reportedly left work at 10:06 p.m. and went out to his white 2007 Dodge Charger parked off Church Street in the Allentown United Methodist Church parking lot, according to the police report.

After the car's owner disabled the car alarm system, a man carrying a gun came up behind him and demanded the keys to the vehicle, according to the police report.

The victim threw his keys at the suspect and took off running in the opposite direction, according to the police report.

The perpetrator drove off in the vehicle, heading west on Route 526, according to the report.

The suspect is described in the police report as a thin, black male between the ages of 15 and 20 and between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall. At the time of the incident, the suspect was reportedly wearing black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt, according to the report.

As of this week, police have no leads in the case, according to police clerk Maryann Szbanz.

Szbanz said that the incident is the first of its kind in the area that she is aware of. She has served as the police clerk for 10 years, she said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact the Allentown Police Department at (609) 259-3491.
