UFA 40 continued right where they left off, opening the new Spring 2008 season with a 2-1 win over Cranbury.
This marks their fourth win in a row, dating back to last December's Fall season. Player Manager Alan Nicholls added some "youth" to the side during the close season. Local players Rich Daesener and Cullen Cavallaro both hit the 40-year-old mark and are now eligible to play in the Monmouth & Ocean Friendship League.
Despite it being a damp Sunday morning, both teams were ready to go at 9 a.m. For the first 30 minutes, it was a very evenly balanced game, until Cranbury took the lead on a breakaway, beating the offside trap before lifting a shot over the advancing keeper, Martin Scarano.
That was the only goal that Scarano would give up; he made several key saves through the rest of the game, allowing his team the luxury to go forward and press for the equalizer and eventual game winner.
Early in the second half, one of the Allentown playerswas brought down in the 18- yard box. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty. Erick Estrada calmly strode up and fired his shot into the right corner out of the reach of the diving keeper.
For the remaining 30 minutes, it was end-to-end play with both teams going at it full speed. Didier Mory continues to grow as a stopper; he played a solid game at the back, anchoring the defense. Quite obviously all of the indoor play he had this winter is paying off. In the 90th minute, Alberto Alves got his head on a low cross from Danny Tiexiera and was able to force the ball past the keeper for the win, capping a remarkable comeback.
The next game will be at home onMarch 30 after the Easter break.UFA40 expects to have Amaro Pereira back in the side to add even more firepower to the lineup.
