RPS earns voter support in election
ROOSEVELT - Voter turnout was small, but the votes in the recent election meant a lot.
Unlike many communities in the area, Roosevelt supported its school district's $2.4 million budget in the April 15 Board of Education election. Voters passed the $1.27 million tax levy in support of the budget in a vote of 65-15.
Voters also electedAllen Newrath,Assenka Oksiloff and Seth Ditchik to serve three-year terms on the Board of Education. Newrath earned the most votes with 68. Oksiloff garnered 63 and Ditchik won 55.
As a result of the election, the tax rate will rise 5 cents per $100 of assessed value. The portion of the tax rate for schools will increase to $1.37 per $100 of assessed value, meaning a home assessed at the borough's average of $300,000 can expect to pay an additional $152.16 in school taxes per year.
Other revenue sources for the budget include state aid in the amount of $811,752, federal aid in the amount of $26,126 and miscellaneous revenue totaling $50,000.
Expenses in the budget include $683,764 for regular instruction, $69,133 for special education, $11,050 for basic skills, $4,000 for co-curricular activities, $84,950 for student services, $7,000 for media services, $60,937 for administration, $159,752 for operation and maintenance and $139,884 for transportation.
