Suicide prevention walk seeks more N.J. participants

Registration is now open for theAmerican Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)'s New York City Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk on June 7-8.

The 20-mile walk from sunset to sunrise will raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention projects, scientific research and support programs for survivors of suicide loss. Last year, the walk grossed nearly $3 million and brought together 1,700 participants.

Nationally, close to one million people make a suicide attempt each year and more than 31,000 die by suicide each year. More than 90 percent of people who die by suicide have an underlying psychiatric disorder, most often depression.

The AFSP is the leading national nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide.
