Smithsonian food exhibit starts atWalnford May 31

Historic Walnford will offer food for thought with its upcoming program, Key Ingredients: America By Food.

This traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian, made possible with cooperation from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, will be visiting Historic Walnford in Upper Freehold from May 31 to July 13.

The program reviews how technology, culture, ethnicity, landscape and tradition have influenced the foods and flavors enjoyed on tables across the nation.

While no food will be served, visitors will learn how the traditional Thanksgiving meal originated as well as the history behind everyday foods and regional dishes.

The family event will also describe how modern cooking evolved from the open hearth and the changes in the way America grows and preserves foods. The history of roadside diners and food festivals will be explored and cooking instructions will be provided.

The event will take place during regular park hours. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
