Random drug testing is just not right
Iwas surprised when I heard that my son spoke at the Allentown High School April 29 Random Drug Testing Forum. He is graduating this year.

I asked him, "Why do you care?" His response, "Because it's not right!"

He left me speechless. If you think about it, he is right. All these years of schooling about our rights as citizens has taught him so. The school where he learned about our rights as citizens of the United States of America wants to take these rights away.

If this policy passes, students will have their liberties removed just because they want to join an after school activity. Parents will sign away their parental liberties.

Realizing that he was right and being proud that he was willing to stand up for the rights of our community even though it will not affect our family directly (other than spending our tax money), I decided to read the policy and attend the next meeting to learn more about the issue.

As I walked into the May 7 meeting, I did not have any questions in mind. I thought that I was just going to listen. I was surprised at the turnout. There were only a few other attendees - some students, a few parents and at least one other adult like me, who will not have a child in this school system next year.

I listened. As the questions and concerns were discussed about the testing procedures, consequences, studies, statistics and our rights, questions flowed into my mind. I ended up asking so many questions and adding comments that I believe that the school board members got tired of hearing from me.

My message to the community: read the policy and then attend the next forum May 19 at the Allentown High School auditorium at 7 p.m. You may be surprised to find that you agree with my son when he says, "It's not right."

Whatever you decide, let the Board of Education know how you feel. My message to board members is before you make your final decision, please attend the forum. Listen to those who elected you to represent them. Representing us is your charge.
