OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AND ONTO THE PLAYGROUND

Just as learning is not confined to a classroom, neither are sports and fitness confined to organized teams and programs. You can do a lot to promote children's fitness, and at a formative time when they can develop a habit to last a lifetime.

The temptation for many children to entertain themselves with sedentary tasks (video games, television, computers etc.) can be balanced by making movement a focus of activity as well.

Children should have at least an hour of physical activity a day. Be aware that time spent standing around in the playground, or waiting for a turn at some organized activity, does not constitute fitness.

Get up and go as a family. Engage in the summer past times such as walking, biking, and swimming. Practice your child's sport of choice together on the fields or in the backyard. The family that plays together, gets fit together.

Combine family fitness with something structured. Seek out camps, clinics, leagues etc. in either a variety of sports, or the sport or activity of your child's choice. A well-run program is an opportunity for your child to meet like-minded peers and gain the benefits of professional instruction.

Think "outside the box." Simple physical activities that were once the staple of children's time are often overlooked. But even a game of hide and seek, a race to the bus stop, or a backyard obstacle course, can be significant opportunities to get your children moving.

Have fun with all aspects of sports. You can combine summer reading programs on sports topics of interest (athlete biographies, history of the game, fiction etc.). And watching can be both inspiring and entertaining. You can attend the many semi-pro and professional sports matches in a variety of sports that are held throughout the area.
